Tips for Selecting Summer Possession

March 18, 2020

Do you have Standard Possession in Texas?  If so, this post if for you.  If you like many other people, you take the month of July to exercise your 30 days of summer possession with your kids, but what if there was a better way to maximize your time with your kids?

During the summer, you continue to get your regular weekends, the first, third, and fifth Friday at 6:00 p.m. until the following Sunday at 6:00 p.m.  If you are the dad, you also get Father's Day weekend, which this year falls on the third weekend in June.  Your weekends look something like this:

Since your weekend possession ends at 6:00 p.m. and your designated summer possession starts at 6:00 p.m. on your designated start date, start your possession on one of your Sunday possession days.  For example, June 21 at 6:00 p.m. then end it on your next Friday weekend possession, which is July 3.  This uses 13 days.  Then start your next period of possession on July 19 at 6:00 p.m. and end it 17 days later, on August 4.  In this example, the kids go to the other parent on Tuesday, but come back on Friday for another weekend.  See the diagram below:

Using this technique does a couple things:

   1) it allows the kids more frequent contact with both parents throughout the summer instead of going a month without seeing one parent or the other,

   2) it maximizes the days so you aren't using as many summer possession days for weekend days you are already allotted.

Don't forget, extended summer designation is due to the other parent by April 1, so figure out what works best for you and your schedule by then.  If you have any questions or need help coming up with your selection, I'm glad to help.  If you have any family law needs, don't hesitate to contact my office via phone or email with any questions you have.
